The Utah football team will face off against one of the big-time teams standing in the way of the Utes winning the Big 12 and going to the playoffs on Saturday. And when they take on Oklahoma State, the team might have figured out a brand new weapon they can use against them.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Utes finding Caleb Lohner is that it doesn’t appear they really knew what they had in him until they gave him an extended tryout the last two weeks.

In that tryout, Lohner became a favorite target of backup quarterback Isaac Wilson. It’s a safe bet he’ll be the same now that Cam Rising is back.

It’s not that Lohner is racking up double digit catches. But it’s more about what he can do and when he can do it. Mainly, the 6-foot-8 tight end can go up and get jump balls like few others can. Likely because he was used to going up for rebounds for the Baylor Bears.

Utah football has a secret weapon in Caleb Lohner

"He is really a tough, eager — has great desire to be successful, and so that's a big part of it, and that's why he's off to a good start," Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham said earlier this week. "It's because of his attitude."

Lohner showed that desire against Utah State. He only had one catch, but it was quite the catch. He went up high and hauled down a 20 yard pass in the end zone. It was the second straight week he did that.

On the season, Lohner has just two catches, but those catches went for 31 yards and two touchdowns.

It stands to reason that the Utah football team will look to use him against Oklahoma State on Saturday. It’s going to be all hands on deck. And Caleb Lohner could be a massive weapon against the Cowboys.
