It's not official yet because Utah football kicks off its game against Utah State this afternoon. However, the worst-kept secret in Salt Lake City this week has been that Cam Rising won't be able to play.
All week, Kyle Whittingham said he wouldn't offer updates on Rising's injury, which he suffered last Saturday against Baylor. However, he's talked about who has taken the QB2 snaps, and it wasn't Isaac Wilson.
No, the freshman quarterback didn't lose his job. So it turns out that it seems as though he got a promotion. At least for Utah football's game against its in-state rival.
The good news here is that the Utes have done this before. They did it all season in 2023 and they didn't have someone like Isaac Wilson to take the reins.
Utah football getting a look at Cam Rising heir apparent
The bad news is that Wilson hasn't look anything resembling great so far. In his defense, he's a freshman who came in to mop up against Southern Utah and then in relief against Baylor.
In two games this season, Wilson has completed 11 of 20 passes for 104 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. He's also run for 11 yards on 7 carries.
There is a chance that with Utah football football knowing that Wilson is starting, there won't be the "air of out the room" like there was against the Bears last week. Here's hoping Wilson can finally take the job, at least for one week and make it his own.
