The Utah football team enters game week have a few aspects that have become very, very clear since the beginning of spring practice earlier this year. Obviously, right at the top of the list is starting quarterback. Head coach Kyle Whittingham is very happy he’s got someone like Cam Rising to lean on.
In the Utes’ first season in the Big 12, Whittingham knows that Rising needs targets he can lean on himself. Especially if the talk about the veteran quarterback not running anywhere near enough is true and not just a head fake for Utah’s opponents.
Luckily, Rising’s top target started emerging almost immediately after he arrived in Salt Lake City. Dorian Singer impressed people in the spring. Then he impressed them in the summer. Now he’s the Utah football team’s undisputed WR1.
Utah football to lean heavily on Dorian Singer
"He has the best ball skills,” Whittingham said on Monday. “He's our WR1, unquestioned WR1 and has been since spring. He's been a big factor for us. Him and Cam have developed a good chemistry too."
"He may have the best hands I've ever seen," Whittingham added.
Singer is arguably the most talented target Cam Rising has ever thrown to, and maybe even the most naturally gifted wide receiver the Utes program has ever fielded.
Singer led the Pac-12 in receiving in 2022 with the Arizona Wildcats. He then headed for USC and was expected to get a massive workload. However, with plenty of other options on offense, Singer caught just 23 passes for 276 yards and three scores.
That decline, as well as Caleb Williams moving to the NFL sparked Singer to move on once again. He’ll look to return to the stature he enjoyed while he was with the Wildcats.
With a Cam Rising that is expected to throw from the pocket far more than he has in the past, the quarterback is going to need someone for him to look for every down. The Utah football program hopes the transfer receiver can be that guy in 2024. If he can, the Utes will almost certainly lock down a Big 12 title.
