As the Utah football team prepares for the Arizona Wildcats, it appears they’re doing so with the expectation that freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson will start his third straight game. While that’s not a total shock, Tuesday was the first time this week that head coach Kyle Whittingham admitted that might be the case.

Whittingham continues to make it clear that he’s not going to give an injury update up front. However, when he fielded a question about the quarterback pecking order, his response indicated that Wilson is number one.

Reporting after Utah football’s Tuesday practice, Josh Furlong spilled the beans for Utes fans.

“Kyle Whittingham said today they don’t have an answer yet for if Isaac Wilson had to leave the field for whatever reason on who they’d put on the field — whether Cam Rising would come on or someone like Brandon Rose.”

Utah football quarterback in flux

The way that comment is phrased makes it clear that Wilson right now is the starter against the Wildcats. Should something happen to him, Cam Rising might come in. Though it doesn’t appear as though that’s all that likely.

This isn’t entirely surprising, considering there had been talk that Whittingham wanted to give Rising more time to heal. With Utah having a bye week next weekend and Wilson performing quite well for a freshman, it was thought Rising would sit out the next two weeks.

Then, hopefully, that much rest would allow the veteran quarterback to return and lead the Utah football in their run for the Big 12 title.
