Losers of 6 straight and only 1-5 against the spread (ATS) in that time, Utah is on a serious downswing. For their troubles, the Utes are rewarded with a matchup against one of the best teams in the country. Ouch.
UCLA has struggled a bit of late, going 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 games, but the Bruins still boast a top 20 offense and top 30 defense led by Johnny Juzang. This is a team that can cut down the nets in April and should feast against a scuffling Utes squad.
The Bruins should be able to dominate a Utah defense that Bart Torvik ranks as the 175th-best in the country in adjusted efficiency. The Utes do not rebound well (176th in defensive rebounding rate) and do not force turnovers (a horrendous 349th in defensive turnover percentage). Against a Bruins squad that is 37th in offensive rebounding rate and 7th in offensive turnover percentage, that spells disaster.
Even if the shots aren’t falling for UCLA, they’ll have enough possessions and second-chance opportunities to let their offense flourish.
If there’s a reason for optimism, it’s that Utah did cover a 19.5-point spread against an Arizona team that profiles better than UCLA. But losing by “just” 18 points isn’t exactly encouraging.
I predict a blowout in this one and love the value we’re getting on UCLA -9. Their recent ATS woes are giving us value and as bettors, we should rejoice. Even if you root for Utah that doesn’t mean you can’t cash! UCLA -9 is my best bet and I feel comfortable taking it up to -12.
