Utah Football: The Aftermath

I didn’t post after the WSU game or yesterday because I wanted to make sure I had my thoughts clear about the game and the program.

Yeah, it sucks.

First the WSU game.  It’s pretty simple, you can’t give up two pick sixes and expect to win.  On the day I wrote “in the Pac-12,” but if you gave up two pick sixes to New Mexico you’d have trouble winning.  Thanks to the Zoob who pointed that out to me.

For anyone handwringing about the offense, we generated 481 yards and 37 points.  For all the handwringing about the defense, they did enough to win considering the offense.  So at the end of the day, it’s the pick sixes.

Next I know there is a lot of freaking out about the program.  And again I just don’t see it.  I mean maybe some mistakes were made handling QB’s in 2009.  But all someone can do is fix that.  Since then we’ve recruited Trevor Wilson, Connor Manning, Brandon Cox, Chase Hansen and Donovan Isom.

You complain about the offense, Kyle brought in Norm Chow, not thinking he’d be gone in a year and then when it didn’t work with Brian he brought in Dennis Erickson.  He’s clearly trying to fix things.  And every thing he addresses gets better.

Two years ago everyone was mad about our linebackers, now look at them.  And all the young talent that played in the secondary and on the O-line will pay dividends next season.

I’ll spend the next several days talking about where we go from here.

I get losing sucks, but I’ve been saying it for 3 football seasons now.  This Pac-12 thing is hard.  The difference between those schools and the MWC is depth.  And depth is a function of being in those conferences.  And we probably need a minimum of five years before that happens.

If we’re in the MWC we have fewer injuries, we just might have run the table with this team in that conference. Utah St. is going to win their division without Chuckie Heisman.  Only Fresno would have challeneged us.

I realize losing isn’t fun.  But sometimes you just have to have patient.  And sometimes you have injuries.  And you just have to accept that was no one’s fault.

I’ll spend the next couple of days talking about where we go from here.
