I Must Comment on the BYU-Boise Game
So last night I ask my wife this question…
"Honey, imagine you’re a football coach. You’re down 7-0 because your team threw and interception for a touchdown. Otherwise, you’ve shut the other team down cold. Also the other team doesn’t have a kicker that is any good. You drive 95 yards to tie the game with 3 minutes to play. Do you go for two or kick the extra point?"
She looks up from her medical school studies and says…
"Why would anyone go for two, that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard."
I still for the life of me can’t possibly understand why the Bronco-Doman braintrust would have gone for two. Hell, in XBOX you kick the extra point unless your wife/girlfriend/mother says you have to go right then. And I’m going to go ahead and assume Bronco’s wife didn’t call and say Bronco had to leave right there.
So when I think about it, I can only come up with one thing. It just doesn’t matter. Bronco and BYU aren’t playing for anything. With hope of doing anything nationally gone and six wins almost certain (Hawaii, Idaho, SJSU, NMSU) does it matter what else BYU does? Win on a two point conversion and you make news, lose and the fans grumble, but they’re BYU fans and they were going to grumble about something. It was either going for two or late game start times.
You have to wonder if this isn’t exactly what Independence has brought to BYU. Can you imagine any coach making that decision with the conference on the line? If Utah is in that situation on Saturday, is there a chance in hell we go for two? Would Chip Kelly even go for two? Would Brian Kelly at Notre Dame make that decision with the vastly larger amounts of scrutiny he’d receive?
So I don’t know what else to think. When you have enough auto wins to make your bowl and you’re not trying to compete for anything else, maybe this is what you do?
What do you kids think?
