Utah Football: Let’s Get Luther Elliss to the College Football Hall of Fame (or at least on the ballot)
Lost in the hoopla of Ty Detmer making the College Football Hall of Fame and old BYU fans everywhere growing moist thinking back to the day day when they were the dominant team in the state, was that a player from CSU named Greg Meyers, was also selected in that class. Now Meyers was a very good player and I don’t mean to disparage him, but how in the hell is he selected and Luther Elliss doesn’t even make the ballot.
For part of the answer, read this article by Greg Hansen of the Arizona Daily Star, lamenting on the lack of inclusion for Tedy Bruschi.
But let’s take a look back in time. In 1994, the year of the greatest game in WAC football history, no one outside of a CSU fan thought Meyers was better than Elliss. Elliss was All-WAC for the third straight year, WAC defensive player of the year (over Meyers) and a consensus All-American. Luther Elliss was essentially the start of Utes making serious impacts in the NFL. (As a side note Luther played 10 seasons and had 2 Pro Bowls, Meyers 4 unremarkable seasons).
Now I could accept, Meyers being elected over Luther. Meyers did come back in 1995 and won the Jim Thorpe award, BUT HOW IN THE HELL IS LUTHER NOT EVEN ON THE BALLOT?
Part of the problem might be in this sentence?
"Over the last decade, the Southern Arizona Chapter of the College Hall of Fame has performed the necessary behind-the-scenes work to get ex-Arizona Wildcats Ricky Hunley, Chuck Cecil and Rob Waldrop inducted into the Hall of Fame."
If it has to do with local chapters needing to do behind the scenes work, I think every Ute fan might have the inclination as to Ty Detmer would make the Hall but a Ute like Luther Elliss wouldn’t even make the ballot.
So I don’t know where to start, but I’d like every Ute fan to take up the mission of getting Luther Elliss at least on the ballot. Spread this around, find out who we need to start bothering and lets at least get a guy nominated who clearly deserves the honor.
Luther Elliss to the College Football Hall of Fame.
