Utah Utes Basketball: Just like Bob Beamon, Roger Maris and Roger Bannister

There are certain records you think will never be shattered.

The 4 minute mile was once thought unattainable.  Till Roger Bannister did it.

No one would ever break Babe Ruth’s Home Run record, till Roger Maris did it.

Bob Beamon shattered the long jump record by almost two feet.

Now the University of Utah Basketball Program has reached that level of greatness.

Oh, it began with the simplest of things.  Jim Boylen, having taken a chance on a kid from Texas combined with a couple of recruiting mistakes, was forced to extend the rebuild another season.  When five players departed the program, people were worried, there was great freaking out.

But where other’s saw a problem, Chris Hill saw opportunity.  So he brought in his man with a plan, Larry Krystkowiak and they went to work.  When Larry was able to watch eight players leave the program, only the most daring among us began to ask, are they really going to try to do it.  But when Jiggy Watkins was dismissed mid-season for being sick, well that is when everyone decided they were serious.

Fast forward to the off-season and there was still so much to be done.  Could Larry find enough new talent to bring in to reach this unreachable number.

Well Larry didn’t care if he could find talent, he was shooting for greatness, for immortality and nothing would stand in his way.

First Odunsi, then Dawson, Story and a surprising move in senior to be Chris Hines.  It was then everyone knew, MY GOD HE’S GOING TO DO IT.

Then today, almost like clockwork, Larry ran the 20th player to leave Utah Basketball in three seasons.  It was like the impossible became the inevitable.  This was our, “DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES, YES” moment.

And just to forever lock up the record, he just might go for 21.

Remember where you were people, your kids will ask about this moment.
