Utah Utes Basketball: A Fond Farewell to George Matthews…
As expected George Matthews joins Anthony Odunsi, Kareem Storey, Javon Dawson and Chris Hines as the fifth player to depart this season and the fourteenth overall under Larry Krystkowiak.
I’ve been on and on over the many things I don’t get about how Larry has handled his time here, but George is the most puzzling. He clearly had a nice career in high school and a very good season at Prep School. He had serious offers from serious schools, better than almost everyone Larry has brought in. And Larry kind of just blew him off.
It would be one thing if we were worth a crap, but I have to wonder how trying to work with one of the few talented guys on the roster could have actually hurt this team. Or why wouldn’t Larry have redshirted him?
At the Arizona game I got the pleasure of meeting George’s mom. She was a very nice lady and she just seemed broken hearted over what had happened with George.
I fully expect us to look up two years from now and see George doing some nice things at a solid D-1 program. This will be one more I don’t get.
George, you seem like a great kid, we wish you the best of luck.
