The Frilly Bow…

This is a new little piece I’m starting on Sunday’s called the Frilly Bow.  Essentially its just some thoughts to wrap up the week that was, you know putting a bow on it.  So here it goes.

1. I think I’ve written before how I don’t get gymnastics.  I respect gymnasts beyond belief, I think they work harder than any other athletes on campus.  But the sport I don’t get it.  So take what I say here as seen through the frame I’m writing.  If this were football or basketball, we’d say the Utes kind of choked in the Pac-12 Championships.  So is that the case here?  Also doesn’t it seem like they choke A LOT.  Its getting close to 20 years without a national title.  And several that we should have won seem to have been lost by a mistimed fall.  Are gymnastics fans troubled by this?

2. It looks like Brian Johnson will be running something like the offense he played in under Andy Ludwig.  Probably a bit closer to Chow as long as we have back and are trying to protect Jordan.  But when Bodhi takes over the offense (I’m nicknaming Travis Wilson, Bodhi as in Patrick Swayze’s character from Point Break and I hope you join me in doing so) I think it will be A LOT like what Brian ran.  And I like it.

3. I’ve worried too about Whit not having enough outside thought on his staff.  To many Utah players not enough outsiders.  But I have to say I’m more positive now about how things are going.  Utah is a weird place, and Kyle has a very diverse staff with two minority coordinators, to Morgan Scalley and now Sharrieff Shah.  Guys who know how to sell all the good Utah has to offer and minimize the bad.  In short Whit is finally turning the University of Utah into the place I always thought it could be and never was as a kid.

4. Next weeks scrimmage will be interesting to me, the second week is usually when the offense catches up to the defense a bit.

5. It’s been far more quiet in hoops departures than I thought it would be with only Odunsi gone.  I’m guessing it will depend upon what several JC players we’re recruiting decide to do.  Still there is no way a guy like Javon Dawson is going to be back, so what is the wait?

6.  As for around the Pac-12, I will be at the Arizona Spring Game to see what Rich Rod has been able to bring to the table here in Tucson.  I’ll even give out a report.

And that is your Frilly Bow.
