Basketball Questions I Do Not Get

First, I hope y’all love the new site, I’m still learning my way around the place so in the next little bit I’ll get it cleaned up and we can have some fun.

But here are some things I’ve been contemplating.  Repeatedly over the weekend, I’ve been told things like we can’t judge Larry until year four.

Why is this?  Why shouldn’t Larry be judged on all the things he’s already done?

In essence, Boylen only got two years with his own guys.  He didn’t have the luxury of dumping everyone because Utah would have lost scholarships.

As a friend pointed out recently, the blue hairs of Utah athletics seems to be giving Larry a benefit of the doubt that was never extended to Ray Giacolletti or Jim Boylen.  What this is about, I’m not sure.  It seems Utah fans are only accepting of a total prick as their head coach.

But I wonder what the limit of this is?

Larry is clearly recruiting over everyone on this team not named David Foster.  Utah is still recruiting six players for next year including 3 point guards, one is a JC.  Utah is recruiting a fourth point guard for 2013.  This says one of two things, either Larry has a goal of one day having an entire team of point guards, or he is going to dump Kareem Storey if there is any possible way to do it.

Further, it also looks like in a perfect world Larry would bring in 4 to 5 more players counting a new freshmen PG, a new JC PG and three other players.  (Side Note: none of these recruits have any real size.  Why is Larry allergic to size?)  With the 7 new guys plus 5 more, that would leave us with one additional scholarship, you’re welcome David Foster.

That would also bring the number of guys run by Larry to 20 over 2 seasons, which I believe has to be an NCAA record if they tracked this sort of thing.

This brings us back to Kareem Storey.  Kareem is a nice little guard.  He’s never going to be a star and at times he’s way too lose with the dribble.  But he could clearly be a solid backup.  He’s also the player Ute fans seems to have grown attached to.  Mostly because he does not have the mark of Boylen upon him.

Would Kareem Storey be a tipping point?  Or does Larry have absolute immunity at this point?  If Larry is a good enough recruiter, we’ll know the answer to that question.
