In something to take our minds off of basketball, today the University of Utah is ranked #1 in the nation in gymnastics. Now I’m told that we have a very young but shockingly talented team that might just be the ones to bring a national championship to the U, since we haven’t had one in Gymnastics since 1995.
But the thing is, I know nothing about gymnastics. Now that isn’t to say I don’t respect the hell out of the gymnasts. I knew some of those girls when I was at the U and they worked their asses off, maybe taking more punishment than any other sport. Truly impressive.
Gymnastics is also very popular at Utah, so popular I’m trying to find someone to write about it for my blog here. (BTW if you’d like to DM me on twitter @hoyosrevenge or contact me somewhere else)
Because I for one just don’t get it. I enjoy being in the arena to watch it. But it all seems so very subjective to me, I can’t find myself having passion about it. I mean I see it when Utah crushes a bad gym squad like BYU but when Georgia beats us for .000001 points for the national title (yes Gym people I’m exaggerating) how could I tell?
Larry Gerlach, a history professor at the U and easily my favorite professor, not to mention faculty rep to the athletic department for years, maybe he still is I don’t know, once said, “There are sports without athletes like Horse Racing and no jockeys don’t count and there are athletes without sports like gymnastics.”
Personally I agree with that assessment. But if you get it and follow U gymnastics and would like to blog from time to time, let me know.
