Christmas Catch-up At The Corner

Hey Kids,

So our crack writing and investigative staff ended up taking some time off for the Holidays.  But its time to get back into the swing of things.  So here is a review of what happened during our break.

UTAH BASKETBALL

Utah won two straight basketball games, versus Idaho State and the University of Portland.  Now I know that all of pro-Larrydom was in wild celebration but lets look at these two wins.  Idaho St.’s coach quit within a couple of days of this loss.  It’s clear that group was going nowhere.  As for Portland, after a horrid first half, their four freshmen starters nearly won the game and Eric Reveno handed Larry his ass and forced him to wear it like a hat.  But the officials bailed us out by allowing Jiggy to drive and collide (a phrase I stole) and go to the free throw line 137 times.

Utah then faced a decent Weber St. team and promptly crapped the bed.  What I take away from this is that Idaho St had pretty much quit, and we hit a bunch of shots in the first half of the Portland that we never hit.  This team isn’t getting better and if they steal a Pac 12 win, it will be because the game followed the Portland blueprint.  Utah hits a bunch of shots the rarely do and hold on for their dear life combined with Jiggy saving them.  No wonder Jiggy’s suspension was so very short.

I wish Eric Reveno was our coach right now.

UTAH FOOTBALL

Norman Chow we hardly knew ya.  Norm left Utah after one year to take the head coaching job at the University of Hawaii.  I get why he did it, chance to be a head coach and in the place he’s from.  But I wish he’d spent another couple of years here.  My hope is that we find  a name coordinator.  I think staff’s need new blood from time to time.

As for the Sun Bowl, well Utah fans have responded, buying nearly 600 tickets for the game.  I suppose I could go on another rant here but I don’t have the energy.

The Sun Bowl might also be the shortest bowl game in the modern era with less than 10 total passes being thrown.

At least its one of the few bowl games being shown on network television.

THE OTHER HOOPS TEAMS WE’RE FOLLOWING

SAINT LOUIS:  Rick Majerus is firmly in the Majerus portion of the pre-season schedule picking up wins over lots of bad teams.  SLU is 12-1 with a big game against New Mexico in THE PIT on New Years Eve.

U-C SANTA BARBARA

UCSB has stumbled a bit but with some losses to some pretty good teams in Washington, Cal and BYU.  They are 5-5 right now but have no bad losses.  Looks like there are some decent teams in the Big West this year.  Should be interesting.

GONZAGA

Gonzaga is looking very good right now, rebounding from losses to Illinois and Michigan St. with wins over Oral Roberts, Arizona, Butler and Air Force.  Gonzaga has a big date with Xavier on New Years Eve, should be fun.

We’ll get back into the swing of things after this.  Thanks for continuing to read this lil’ blog of mine.
