Back in 2005, New Mexico State had a hoops season where they won five games.  I know, I know, five wins seems like a dream season to Ute fans at this point.  They won 16 the first year there, 25 their second year there, also got an NCAA berth where they took Kevin Durrant and Texas to the wire, in fact had a lead with six minutes to play till Durrant was perfect down the stretch.

This guy could have been Utah’s coach, his name is Reggie Theus.

Theus would have done a number of things for Utah.  First he’s a name and would have drawn some attention to Utah.  Second from his experience at NMSU he can both recruit quickly and work in a place that isn’t giving a ton of resources.  Third, he’s African-American, which would help Utah’s issues in recruiting black kids.

Plus it would show a commitment to winning.

Instead, we hired Larry.  Larry wanted to prove he’s a tough guy and ran everyone off.  Insecurity, thy name is Larry Krystkowiak.

If only NMSU had drawn an overrated Nevada team, maybe we’d have a real basketball coach right about now.
