This Week in Actual College Hoops
Here at the Corner, because Ute hoops is so very awful and just getting worse, we’re giving the service of three teams all from non-power conferences that we’re going to follow instead. That way we can feel like college basketball is still a sport. Those teams are:
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Saint Louis Billikins
University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos
Each week will give a quick rundown of their previous week and tell you what they have to look forward to.
1. THE GONZAGA BULLDOGS
Gonzaga had two games this past week. In the first they blew out Notre Dame at home. The Zags were led by 15 points from both Robert Sacre and David Stockton plus 11 points and 15 boards from Elias Harris. Saturday saw the Zags first loss of the season as they traveled to Illinois. The Zags made several runs but after Robert Sacre was kicked him the head (He had 16 at that point) he became less effective and they couldn’t get over the hump. Elias Harris led the team with 19 pts and 8 boards.
Gonzaga plays host to Michigan St. on the 10th.
2. Saint Louis Billikins
Since we last looked at the Billikins, Majerus’ team lost their first game, at Loyola Marymont coached by former UNLV assistant Max Good. SLU gave up 49 2nd half point which had to make Rick less than happy. They bounced back with a win over the Portland Pilots. SLU was paced as always by Brian Conklin and Kyle Cassity. Cody Ellis also had 16 off the bench.
SLU faces Vermont on the 7th and Illinois-Springfield on the 10th
3. UCSB Gauchos
UCSB had only one game but boy was it a doozy. UCSB faced UNLV fresh off the Rebels beating #1 North Carolina. UCSB took UNLV to double overtime before bowing out, just like they took SDSU to overtime. It seems the Gauchos are making a case for being one of the best teams in the west. UCSB got 36 and 10 from Orlando Johnson, a guy who you should start paying attention to.
UCSB’s next game is Dec. 13th vs San Diego.
