Since Its Really Over Tonight, Cheer For One of These Teams…

Dear Ute Fans…

Our regular season ended last Saturday not with a bang but with the smallest of whimpers.  Tonight our season will truly end when Colorado disposes of us.  But we deserve to cheer for someone in the NCAA tournament, so here are some recommendations.

Colorado St.- This is the team I think everyone needs to jump on the bandwagon.  Plus they’re not a lock right now so it gives you one more chance to watch MWC basketball.  I love this team and their coach Tim Miles.  They’re 18-10 and RPI of 22 and a SOS of 8.  Not to mention wins over SDSU, UNLV and New Mexico.

Long Beach St.- Ok this is become a little bit of, “why didn’t we hire this guy column.”  I’ve always been a Dan Monson guy, he was the guy who kicked things off at Gonzaga.  He went to a bad situation at Minnesota but is doing great things at The Beach.   They went 15-1 in conference have an RPI of 25 and SOS of 110 (or what will seem like a really hard schedule compared to Utah next year BOOM).  The 49ers probably aren’t in yet so cheer for them to win the Big West Tourney.

Saint Mary’s- Yep one more, why didn’t we hire this guy.  Randy Bennett has worked a miracle at Moraga.  Bad location, horrible gym and bad financial support.  Why some school who wants to rebuild their basketball program wouldn’t give this guy what he asked for (looking at you Chris Hill) is just bizzare.  Matthew Dellavadova is fun to watch.

Gonzaga- Yeah I know Ute fans aren’t going to cheer for Gonzaga but I just don’t care.  I love the Zags and if you should watch Kevin Pangos because he’s a star in the making.  Elias Harris has rebounded nicely this season as well.  If they get the right matchups and not a second round matchup in Omaha against Kansas, they could make a run.

Saint Louis- Would this be complete without Rick Majerus.  Saint Louis is going to fall in that 6-7 seed area and is going to be a nightmare for some three seed in the 2nd round.  It took Rick a long time to get here but he’s finally going back to the dance.  I know I’ll be cheering for him.

The Best of The Rest:  Gotta say I’ll be cheering for all the MWC schools, SDSU, UNLV and New Mexico.  Also I really liked Wichita St and Creighton out of the Valley.  As for the Pac-12, I like Cal and I really don’t like Lorenzo Romar and Washington.  Like Sark, I just think he’s dirty.  The one I’ll be cheering for is Dana Altman and Oregon.  They’re almost in now so they need a good few days in LA.  I hope they get there.

So there is a whole slew of teams to follow during March Madness.  Pick one or a few and enjoy.
