This Week in Actual College Hoops...

As always this column is to let people follow real basketball teams and not have to deal with what is going on at Utah.  Those teams as always are, UCSB Gauchos, Saint Louis U. Billikins and the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

UCSB- When last we visited, UCSB had just lost a 2OT thriller to UNLV.  Considering all schools are in finals, they had one game, a win over San Diego 65-61.  Jaime Serma had 22 to make up for a lack of scoring from their big guns Orlando Jones and James Nunnaly.  UCSB battles Washington on Friday night.

Saint Louis- Rick had his typical exam week patsy in Illnois-Springfield.  SLU won by 10 and considering they probably practiced that morning, its an expected level of victory.  Kwami Mitchell led all scorers with 22.  The typical Majerus schedule continues as they face Alabama St.

Gonzaga- Mark Few continued Gonzaga’s tradition of a tough non-conference schedule as they welcomed Michigan St. to the Kennel.  Former Michigan St coach Jud Heathcote is from Spokane and lives there so this has developed into a real game.  Michigan St. won by 7.  David Stockton led all scorers with 19.  Gonzaga faces Oral Roberts on Thursday and then Arizona in Seattle.

  • The Moose’s Whistle

David Stockton is not a D1 player. If he’s leading Gonzaga in scoring, that means Gonzago is not very good. David Stockton is only on the team because of his name. His father is John Stockton. John Stockton is a selfish prick.

Moose you’re simply wrong, the kid is a solid contributor and has easily proven he belongs on the team.

      • The Moose’s Whistle

Admittedly, I’ve only watched David Stockton play against TJ Fredette’s brother, and he looked terrible, especially defensively. He refused to guard the three point shooter, choosing instead to dive inside to try to get a steal to pad his stats. Just like his father. Yeah, he may get 1 more steal a game than your average point guard, but is it worth the six three point shots he gives up?

      • The Moose’s Whistle

You may refer to Jimmer Fredette as “TJ’s Brother” for now on. I coined the phrase but I will let you use my brilliance.

  • The Moose’s Whistle

What’s up with George Matthews? People were comparing him to Paul Pierce and this was Jim Boylen’s big recruiting win. I actually thought he was going to replace Clyburn. Wow, I was wrong.

The University of Utah Runnin’ Utes kept BYU from covering the spread and beat Idaho State quite easily. If the Utes can come up with a win against Portland, we may start talking about a possible win or two against a PAC 12 foe, and a 5+ win season. Pretty amazing considering just a week ago we were a lock to finish 1-29.
